Know where your stop tap is, and know that it works.
What is a stop tap?
Your stop tap, sometimes called a stopcock, is the valve that shuts off the water supply to your home. In an emergency it is the first thing to turn off. It is often under the kitchen sink, but it can also be in a cupboard near the front door, under the stairs, in a utility room or in the garage. If you have never found yours, find it now, before you need it.
Signs it needs replacing
A stop tap that has not been turned for years often seizes. Signs it needs attention are:
It is stiff or will not turn at all.
It turns but does not shut the water off fully.
It weeps or drips around the spindle.
It is corroded or has a green or white crust on it.
Please do not force a seized stop tap. It can snap, and then you have a leak and no way of stopping it.
How we replace one
To change a stop tap, the water to that pipe has to be off. If the stop tap still works, we use it. If it does not, we may need to shut the water off elsewhere, such as at the valve outside the property. That outside valve is not always accessible or working, and if it is not, we will explain what is possible before we do anything. Once the old valve is out, we fit a new one, restore the water and check for leaks.
Keep yours working
Turning your stop tap fully off and on once or twice a year keeps it moving, and it means you know it still works. Do it gently, and check for drips afterwards. If it leaks or sticks when you try, call us rather than force it.
