Like-for-like swaps, new radiators and new valves, fitted tidily.
When a radiator needs replacing
A radiator usually needs replacing when it keeps leaking, when the body has rusted through, when it never heats evenly however often it is bled, or when you want a different size or style. Sometimes the real problem is a stuck or weeping valve, and a new valve is a smaller job than a whole new radiator. We will look before we suggest anything.
Like-for-like, or something different
The simplest swap is the same size in the same place, because the existing pipes line up. If you want a bigger radiator, a taller one, a towel rail or a new position, tell us what you have in mind and send a photo. The pipework may need altering, and it is better to know that before you buy.
If you have already bought a radiator, tell us the make and size. We can usually fit one you have supplied, but we will check it suits the room and the pipe positions first.
What a radiator job involves
We isolate the radiator using its valves where we can, drain the water out of it, take it off the wall and fit the new one on sound brackets. Then we refill, bleed the air out and check every joint for leaks before we leave. Draining a radiator means some dirty water comes out, so expect us to protect the floor and ask you to clear the area.
If the valves are old or seized we will suggest replacing them at the same time. If you want to control each room separately, see TRV installation.
Dirty water and old systems
Black water when we drain a radiator can be a sign of sludge in the system. If that looks likely, we will say so and explain the options, which may include a power flush, rather than fit a clean new radiator into a dirty system.
When it is not really a radiator problem
If several radiators are cold, or the heating is not coming on at all, the fault is more likely in the heating system than in one radiator. Start with boiler repairs. If an old system is beyond a sensible repair, new boilers explains how a replacement works.
Water coming through a ceiling or spraying from a pipe cannot wait: turn off your stop tap and see emergency plumber. For a smaller drip, see leaking radiator repair or our main plumbing repairs page.
Getting a quote
We do not list prices because radiators, valves and pipework differ from house to house. Tell us how many radiators, the sizes if you know them and your postcode, with a photo if you can. Call 01709 456402 or ring the mobile 07401 429080, or use the contact page. We are a local Rotherham team, based on Moorgate Road, and we travel to nearby areas when the job makes sense.
FAQ
Can you fit a radiator I have already bought?
Usually, yes. Tell us the make and size first so we can check it suits the room and the pipes.
Do I need new valves as well?
Not always. If the old valves are sound and turn freely they can often stay. If they are seized or weeping, we will say so.
Will I be without heating during the work?
Usually only for part of the visit. We will explain what is needed for your system before we start.
For the boiler side of what we do, see boiler servicing.
