Stop the water, find the leak, repair it properly.
Stop the water first
Turn off your stop tap. If you are not sure where it is, stop tap replacement explains the usual places. Open a cold tap to drain what is left in the pipes, and keep water away from sockets and lights. If a ceiling is bulging or dripping, keep out from under it. For a burst pipe or a serious leak, see emergency plumber and call us straight away.
When we attend
We attend, find the leak and repair it. Some leaks are easy to see: a spray from a joint, a drip under the sink, a wet patch on a bathroom ceiling. Others take more looking. A damp patch or stain that keeps coming back, a musty smell, floorboards that feel soft or a drop in water pressure can all point to a pipe that is leaking somewhere you cannot see.
We start with the visible pipework and the places leaks usually begin: under sinks, behind bath panels, around the stop tap, the cylinder cupboard and the joints near radiators. Then we work through the system section by section, isolating parts of it to see what stops the leak. Sometimes we need to lift a floorboard or open a small access hole, and we will tell you before we cut into anything.
Repairing the pipe
Once we have found where it is, the repair depends on the pipe and the damage. A failed joint can be re-made. A split or corroded length is cut out and replaced. If the pipework is old and keeps failing in different places, we will tell you, and explain the choice between repairing again and replacing more of it. We would rather you know that at the start than pay for the same repair twice.
After the leak
We fix the plumbing. Making good afterwards, such as plastering, decorating or flooring, is usually a job for other trades, and drying out a wet property can take time. If water has damaged your home, it is worth telling your insurer early. Leaks from radiators are covered separately on leaking radiator repair, and dripping taps on tap repair.
Getting help
We do not list prices because every leak is different. Tell us where the water is, when you first noticed it and your postcode, with a photo if you can. Call 01709 456402 or ring the mobile 07401 429080, or use the contact page. For everyday jobs around the house, see plumbing repairs. If a leak has stopped your heating working, see boiler repairs, and new boilers if an old system is past repairing. We are a local Rotherham team, based on Moorgate Road.
FAQ
How can I tell if a pipe is leaking?
Damp patches, stains that keep coming back, a musty smell or a drop in water pressure are the usual clues. A water meter that keeps moving with every tap off also means water is going somewhere. Tell us what you have noticed and where, and we will attend and find it.
Is a leaking pipe an emergency?
If you cannot stop the water, or it is near electrics or coming through a ceiling, yes. Turn off the stop tap and call us.
Can you repair a leak under the floor?
Where we can reach it, yes. We may need to lift a board or open a small access. We will tell you before we cut into anything.
For the boiler side of what we do, see boiler servicing.
Burst pipes
A burst pipe is a split or failed length of pipe letting water out quickly. Turn off the stop tap, open a cold tap to drain what is left in the pipes, and call us. We attend, find the leak and repair it: a split length is cut out and replaced, or a failed joint is re-made, and then we check the repair holds. We take calls 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. If you cannot stop the water, see emergency plumber.
