Heat pumps

Not a magic box

A heat pump is not a magic box, and it is not the right answer for every house in Rotherham. AquaTec Plumbing & Heating can advise on, supply and fit heat pumps from our base on Moorgate Road. If you are trying to move off an old boiler, cut running costs, or plan a longer-term heating change, we would rather walk the property with you than sell you a unit off a leaflet.

Most domestic jobs we are asked about are air source heat pumps: an outdoor unit that takes heat from the air and a system indoors that feeds radiators or underfloor heating. They work well in the right building. They work poorly in a draughty house with tiny radiators, a weak electrical supply, or an expectation that it will behave exactly like a hot combi. That is not a reason to avoid them. It is a reason to survey first.

What we look at: how the house is insulated, the size and type of radiators, the hot-water cylinder (you will usually need one), the space outside for the unit, planning or neighbour issues if the garden is tight, and whether the consumer unit and incoming supply can take the load. If the honest answer is “not yet - do the loft and the radiators first”, we will say that. If a new boiler is the more sensible spend this year, we will say that too. You can still plan a heat pump for later.

Running costs depend on the house, the tariff and how you use the heating. We have not put a yearly saving on this page because those figures go stale and they are easy to get wrong. Ask us for a view on your property, not a national average. Government grants and schemes change; if something is available at the time we quote, we will tell you what we know and what you need to check, rather than promise a grant we cannot control.

Installation is a longer job than a like-for-like boiler swap. Expect disruption: pipework, a cylinder if you do not have one, an outdoor pad or brackets, and time to commission and explain the controls. Heat pumps like a steady flow temperature. Turning them like a gas boiler - off all day, blasting in the evening - is how people decide they “do not work”. We will talk you through that before we leave.

We cover Rotherham and the surrounding areas. Sheffield is a service area, not a second office. If you already have a heat pump that needs attention, say so - faults, noisy units and poorly commissioned systems are a different conversation from a new install.
